"New Spring"
New Spring in the Dead of Winter is an interdisciplinary performance project made by artists from Montréal, Canada, during their residency at Arts Iceland in Isafjordur from May 1st - 28th which will then be presented in Iceland and Montreal.
Sparked by the Icelandic texts derived from songs sung by their great-grandmother Ingibjorg Gudmundsdottir (1891-1994), this project arcs through 4 generations of women. In New Spring visual worlds by Zuzu Knew, parallel music made by Syngja, both are infused by the same themes of personified nature and mythic archetypes.
Their reinterpretations have become an original performance;
compositions and songs with Cello, electronics, synthesizer and voice with costumes and projections that combine to create an immersive experience, both visceral and surreal.

It’s like The Knife meets Joanna Newsom. – Ride the Tempo
The bubbly keys add stress, accurately encompassing the passion that is found in Icelandic folk culture – passion bred by the cycle of long days and long nights, relaxing summers and harsh winters. – Grayowl Point
When you enter the world of Montreal’s Syngja, there’s never really a clear line between fantasy and reality […] leaving you in a bewildered state of bliss as the music penetrates the vast parts of your imagination. – Noisey
The album is lush, melodic and dramatic, folding together elements of Icelandic folk music, classical string arrangements and pop structuring. – Cult MTL

"Floating Body "
Zuzu Knew: Analog Projections/Costume/Props
Tyr Jami: Cello/Sampler/Voice
Julia Thomas: Dance/Puppeteering Catherine Legault: Video
Floating Body is based on a performance by Tyr Jami (cello and voice), Jasa Baka (visual projections and costumes) and Julia Thomas (choreography and dance), which was originally performed in Montréal and New York City. The abstract narrative follows one body as it morphs through several folkloric archetypes.

Granny goes for a ride and her headlights hit the Fawn as she is driving through the forest. The Fawn dies, but its body resurrects as a puppet. It gets seduced by the Wolf and goes through a "re death". The Hunter thinks he has saved the day with his gun, but the true solution is in the key of the Priestess.
