Syngja creates immersive audiovisual performances that merge acoustic instrumentation with electronic production and real-time visual manipulation. Using cello, voice, and digital processing, Tyr Jami builds hypnotic soundscapes that trigger responsive visuals, creating a live dialogue between sonic and visual elements.
The project's foundation lies in inherited recordings of her great-grandmother, Ingibjorg Gudmundsdottir (1891-1994), singing ancient Icelandic melodies and poetry. These archival materials are transformed through digital manipulation into experimental pop, creating rhythmic variations and textural explorations that bridge historical and contemporary sound practices.
Based in Montréal since 2007, Tyr holds an MMus in Composition and Sound Creation (UdeM, 2026) and a graduate diploma in Digital Music (2022). Her work has been supported by CALQ through multiple grants and residencies, including Mothership NYC (2023, 2026) and artist residencies in Iceland (Gullkistan, In House Outer Space, Arts Islande).
She has performed at Suoni per il Popolo (2023), NXNE, and Sled Island (2019), and co-wrote the award-winning soundtrack for the documentary "Sisters, Dream and Variations" (Iris Award 2021, Indie Fest Award of Excellence 2021). Syngja has been releasing music since 2011.
